Book Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

I suppose a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last

Thinking back on the series I do not think I will ever read it again. I did not like this book at all and it prevents me from enjoying the series.

Synopsis

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered – fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend to complexities of human nature – and of herself – while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

I give Allegiant by Veronica Roth two out of five stars because I really do not like the book. It really feels like Veronica had an idea, but then decided to change to whole plot up to what it is today. I feel it is not thought through and chaotic.

I did hear of the big spoiler through twitter, but since I read so much, by the time I got to read the book, I already forgot it.

Tris goes over the top by giving the ultimate sacrifice and taking someone’s place do it. It felt like she was trying to make a point to her fans.

I liked the pieces written from Four perspective. I have always found Four an interesting character and in a way I still like him, but some choices I found difficult to swallow.

The Movie(s)

Since the last movie has not been released yet, I can not say anything about that. I do think it is weird they cut this book into two movies. It feels like they are just milking the series for what it is worth. By now I am so done with having to wait another year for something that could have been concluded in just 2,5 hours.

I had some serious problems with how certain characters acted. For example was Max during his trail seemed to be smug and looking as if he did not have anything to fear. It looked stupid as if he did not have any real reactions. Also was Matthew completely different from who he is in the books. He looked evil and up to no good.

In this movie, they fixed the problem I had with the complete exodus at the end of the last movie. So I think that is one of the few positives.

Last movie I already noticed during the last movie (Insurgent) that there was a ridiculous machine that measured the amount of someone being Divergent and here they speak again about it. Even though the book specifically states that it does not matter how much Divergent someone is, but only the fact. Because it was a sign of being genetically pure and not damaged. The fact that they changed it for the movie, made me upset because it changed the whole story for me. I usually don’t like it when the main character is The One of something and really liked that about this book series. Because Tris was not the only Divergent in the whole world.

A thing related to this that I had a problem with was that there was completely no mention of the other cities and experiments, which also made the world more interesting.

I will not start on all the things wrong with the escape from the city but then when they finally get outside the wall, it is completely different then it was before, I think it was in the movie Divergent. And there was the worst CGI with the flying discs. The shield and cocoons they generate just looked ridiculous.

They also skipped a lot of the story that I was curious about to see on screen and added stuff that had no need to be in there, only to get it reach the 2,5 hour mark. The same goes for Tris, Christina, Four, Caleb and Peter going back to the city and nearly wiping their own memories.

I really did not like the first movie for Allegiant and since I had not been sure on whether I wanted to finish this movie series, I will most likely not watch the movie.
