Synopsis

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

I gave Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz 4 out of 5 heart. The story is so real and well written!

Usually contemporary romance novels are not my thing. I am just not crazy on the entire romance thing! I feel they are usually just not that well done, because the main characters are forced into the relationship, because the author wants them to be together. Not Benjamin.

It also helped that I just did not know much more then it was a contemporary novel. I felt like I was just reading a story about a boy’s life, he is angry and can’t swim. He then gets to know this other boy, who teaches him to swim and become friends. This start makes you feel like “oh no, these guys are going to fall in love!” Because this could be the start of any romance novel. But the actual romance stayed away. And the friendship stayed. I just loved this. It really was a story about two friends and over a year of their lives together.

Aristotle and Dante are to great boys, who are funny and each there own person. They are completely different from each other, but also from any other characters I have read about. I am so glad I read Benjamin’s book.

Aristotle is such a angry character, and in a way with a reason. His parents hush him up when he wants information about his brother and they don’t really talk. All the reasons why he is this way are explained in the book. I understood him so well it was scary.

Dante is the really fun and happy guy, he has loving parents and he does not shy away from Aristotle’s anger. And while they are together, Aristotle is not as angry as when he is alone.

I am so glad I did not read Aristotle and Dante when I bought it, it might have been hyped too much back then and now I had it standing around for so long, I did not know anything about the hype about it. Which might have helped me not know what was going on.

I recommend everyone to read this beautiful novel, it is very easy and has great depth. I am hoping books like this will make the world a better place and people more open to the LGBT community.
