Book Review: Champion by Marie Lu

I’ve been searching a long time for something I think I lost

I had to force myself to read Champion to finish the Legend series, because by the end of Prodigy I knew why I thought I did not like the Legend series. I mostly did not like Champion, back when I first read it and this time I did not like it again.

Synopsis

He is a Legend.

She is a Prodigy.

Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything.

I gave Champion by Marie Lu only two out of five hearts. Because I think it is not very original and it is mostly drama. Most of what happened made me think of Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

By the end Marie Lu is trying to pull on our heartstrings when Day doesn’t remember June after his operation. But that means he never cared for her all that much. If he can still remember his mother’s death, why would he not remember the girl he met before that time, who is the cause of her death and who he loved for most of the rest of the series? I felt it was was forced and tried to make us care.

I mostly cared for Day’s brother, he was funny even though the odds were so very much against him. First he gets sick during the first novel and then he is used as a biological weapon during the second novel and he loses his sight, while being alone.

I already knew I did not like it from the start, because of my previous experience with this novel. I might never read this series again, because I don’t like not finishing series and having to leave this series after the second novel is then not really an option for me. But I had fun reading it while it lasted.
