Book Review: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling

Those we love never truly leave us, Harry

I was excited to hear the news of the new Harry Potter play about a year ago. But when I looked at ticket prices and know I do not live in London, I knew I was never going to go. But a couple of days later I heard there was going to be a book with the script I was stocked again. Even though it is not as well written as the other Harry Potter books, I still enjoyed myself for the 3 hours it took me to get through it.

Synopsis

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

I gave Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling 3 out of 5 stars because it just did not exceed expectation and some pieces completely butchered some of the main characters. It is a fun read though even though it is pretty short, only 330 pages (about the same length as The Sorcerer’s Stone) and has a lot of white lines, due to it being a script.

I feel very comfortable reading scripts, I read the scripts of all Shakespeare novels back when I was in high school and the library had the novels always lend out. So that did not bother me much. I have hear d some comment from people not liking it or that they expected a real novel. But it literally says so on the cover and so I do not feel people can judge this book on the fact they do not like a script too much.

Because it is a script, you do not get too much about the characters thoughts and backgrounds. Which I feel sad about, but understand.

Harry is still Harry, but now he is a dad and works, instead of having adventures with his friends. The synopsis says he is overworked, I did not really got that fact from the play, only that he works much. But my dad works much and is not overworked, so I did not see how that tied into him having problems relating to Albus.

I like Scorpius, he is funny and everything his dad is not. That and the fact that he too has a problem with his dad makes him relate very well with Albus. Which is more than Harry and Ron at the beginning of The Sorcerer’s Stone.

Overall I liked the book and the characters, but some facts and characters were changed in such a way it did not boat well with me. I did not get annoyed with the book over it, but it bugged me a bit. That is why I gave the book 3 out of 5 stars.
