Book Review: Hunted by Meagan Spooner

I will call you Beauty, for that is what you are.

I enjoyed Hunted a lot, especially since I have alway loved Beauty and the Beast. This story reminds me of the latter.

Synopsis

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

I give Hunted by Meagan Spooner four out of five hearts. The story is great and reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast but without the sweet and stuffy love. Yeva falls in love in the end, but that is not the main story.

Yeva is a girl driven by her hate for the Beast to revenge her father, who she thinks killed him. But she does not know what she wants in the end. She finds out she likes the Beast for who he is and that he might not be responsible for her father’s death. She goes from this girl driven by revenge to a caring woman. When she returns to her sisters she cares more for them than before and later when she returns to the Beast she is an adult who knows what she wants.

The Beast gets a shock when he is waiting for a brother or father to come and rescue Yeva and she does not possesses any of the two. But when she tells him she can do the thing he needs the brother or father for, he trains her to do it. I thought it was funny because of the stereotype that is so typically displayed here and then turned around. Also the thoughts of the Beast add something to story that would have gotten lost in translation if they had not been there.

Overall I liked this story a lot. I do not know why I give it four instead of five stars, but I can not pinpoint what it is I am missing or what bothers me about the story. If you like strong female characters than this is a story for you. Do not shy away from the romance if you do not like it. Because I hate romance and loved this book!
