Book Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Red and Silver and stronger then both

The idea of red and silver blooded people sound to me interesting. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard brings honor to the it’s name. It is a curious tale.

Synopsis

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart …

I am curious how the Red Queen series will evolve. I do think it is not the best thing ever, but I will finish the series.

Overall the book had a very slow start, it took over 75 pages for anything big to happen. And because of that I did not like it at first.

I like the character of Mare Barrow. She has red blood, but has powers like the Silvers. It was pretty predictable and it feels a bit like Divergent all over again.

Cal and Maven Calore are two great brothers, but one feels left behind by their father. Even though one of them almost catches Mare’s heart, the other one gets a shot at it too.

To be honest the whole story was very predictable, precisely on the point where everyone else is like “MIND BLOWN!” Maybe I have read too many books, but with this one I did not like the predictability all that much. I am hoping Glass Sword will be a better read.

I did like the end of the book and the epilogue and I had a bit of fun with that.
