Book Review: Save the Cat by Blake Snyder

The point is that a good logline, in addition to pulling you in, has to offer the promise of more

When I started to delve deeper into writing books everyone was raving about Save the Cat, because it is such a great book on screenwriting and writing in general. I think differently I would advice people to read as many writing books as they can instead of focusing on just one.

Synopsis

This ultimate insider’s guide reveals the secrets that none dare admit, told by a show biz veteran who’s proven that you can sell your script if you can save the cat!

I give Save the Cat by Blake Snyder three out of five hearts because it tells nothing new if you have already read a couple of writing books and the only new parts are really about screenwriting in particular.

If you look into books on writing, videos on writing or just anything on writing you will find mentions towards Save the Cat. Blake Snyder might have been the first to have a well written book about writing in general and screenwriting in particular, but in this climate is nothing new and surprising. One can get the same information off the internet for free.

I thought the writing was sometimes more difficult that it had to be. As if Blake wanted only special people to read it. If you are trying to explain things to someone than aiming your writing only at the higher educated wannabe screenwriter is not great. It keeps this book in this special corner it is never going to get out from even though Blake had bothered a bot more, it could have been with the more general writing books.
