Book Review: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces

I got The Darkest Minds a while ago from a friend of mine. I started reading it then, but could not get into it. Now I finally finished it and did not like it that much.

Synopsis

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

I gave The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken three out of five hearts. I thought it was not very interesting and not very original. It made me wonder why Alexandra made every orange kid have the same qualities except for Ruby.

Ruby was not very note worthy, she had no note worthy qualities and characteristics. Which is not what I had expected when I first heard all the hype for this book. It felt like she was most of the time just a damsel in distress and could not do anything on her own.

I found Liam very shallow and just another guys who falls in love with the main character. This annoys me most of the time and so could not keep my interest.

The only character I thought that was interesting was the lunatic, Clancy, which Ruby did not notice until it was to late. He was interesting because he was let go and only later you found out why. I think it gave the character more depth.

The rest of the characters were not very memorable.

Even though the world is interesting, they do not do much with it. It is this dystopian world where the only get to see small parts of it. Which was kind of sad, I would have liked to see more of this world.

I am still hesatating on wither I am going to read the next two books in The Darkest Minds trilogy. But I guess you will see if I put another review of these books.
