I am the djin who watched you at birth

I found a book by Laura Gallego García in Madrid that looked interesting. I couldn’t find it in English, but I did find The Legend of the Wandering King by her. I read it because I was curious about her writing and liked it.

Synopsis

A prince with more power than heart … a poet who may be mad … and a carpet containing all of human history combine in this brilliant new fantasy by one of Spain’s brightest young writers.

Walid was a model prince: handsome, intelligent, skilled in the arts of warfare and poetry. But the kingdom boasted one greater poet than he, and out of jealousy Walid cursed the man to create an impossible work of art: a carpet showing the history of the entire human race. The poet died weaving it. Men went mad seeing it. And when it is stolen, Walid discovers his life’s quest: to recover the carpet and earn forgiveness for his mistakes. Inspired by the story of a real king of pre-Muslim Arabia, LEGEND is a magical fantasy, a meditation on destiny, and an utterly thrilling adventure.

I give The Legend of the Wandering King by Laura Gallego García four out of five hearts because I thought the story was beautiful. The plot is based on several historical figures in the middle east, it is very interesting how Laura weaves them into one story about repentance, diligence and forgiveness.

I found the story inspiring and thoughtful and had good fun while reading. The story contains a bit of a lot of genres, like mystery, suspense, action and romance. It read like a retelling of a fairy tale, which might have to do with the fact that the plot and characters are based on historical figures. The pacing made it for a fast read and all the mystery kept me on the edge of my seat, curious what was going to happen next.
