Book Review: The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James

It’s hard to focus on the future when the past is so distracting

I really enjoy space books, but this book wasn’t it. The book started out really interesting, but it soon went down the drain. FAST.

Synopsis

Can you fall in love with someone you’ve never met, never even spoken to – someone who is light years away?

Romy Silvers is the only surviving crew-member of a spaceship travelling to a new planet, on a mission to establish a second home for humanity amongst the stars. Alone in space, she is the loneliest girl in the universe until she hears about a new ship which has launched from Earth – with a single passenger on board. A boy called J.

Their only communication with each other is via email – and due to the distance between them, their messages take months to transmit across space. And yet Romy finds herself falling in love.

But what does Romy really know about J? And what do the mysterious messages which have started arriving from Earth really mean?

Sometimes, there’s something worse than being alone . . .

I give Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James two out of five hearts because the latter half of the book was so bad it completely ruined the strong start of the novel.

Lauren James tries to keep a lot of things secret, but instead of keeping it vague she actually lies about certain things. Whether it is her trying to think that the characters just taught themselves to believe the lie. But I think that one of these facts can’t be lied about and even though she would try, it wouldn’t work.

The story starts out really strong, a girl alone in space with a mission. When she gets the news she will be joined by another in another year, she is of course very happy not to be alone and to get to her destination much faster. But soon things start to go array. America is taken over by an unknown superpower and she loses contact with anybody she has ever known.

But then, oh man. She is bullied by that superpower, which is where I started to doubt what was going on. And it started to annoy me. All my reasons for doubting turned out to be true and I stopped caring. The reasons why were just bad and not very well build up because Lauren tried to keep secrets. If the author had left things vaguer instead of keeping all out secrets this wouldn’t have happened.

The story was really hurt by Lauren’s actions and because of that I wished the latter half of the book never happened, making me have to give this novel only two hearts. There are loads of people who did like the ending, but I just thought it was cheap and not very well done. There were no little clues or anything to who and what was about to happen. No set up at all for the last half of the book and the climax of this story.
