Book Review: The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross

We rise for the Queens of our past, and for the Queens to come

Even though The Queen’s Rising started a little bit confusing, I loved it because I thought this novel has a great world and good plot.

Synopsis

When her seventeenth summer solstice arrives, Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron.

Growing up in the southern Kingdom of Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her for such a life. While some are born with an innate talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she belatedly chose to study knowledge. However, despite all her preparations, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—the solstice does not go according to plan and she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, and with no other choices, she accepts. But there is much more to his story, and Brienna soon discovers that he has sought her out for his own vengeful gain. For there is a dangerous plot being planned to overthrow the king of Maevana—the archrival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the northern throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.

With war brewing between the two lands, Brienna must choose whose side she will remain loyal to—passion or blood. Because a queen is destined to rise and lead the battle to reclaim the crown. The ultimate decision Brienna must determine is: Who will be that queen?

I give The Queen’s Rising by Rebecca Ross five out of five hearts because I loved it. The beginning was a bit confusing, because there has been almost no world building and it felt like Rebecca assumed we knew about the issues between the Kingdom of Valenia and Maevena. But soon the story moves on by skipping almost ten years and we are introduced into the world and how things work. Even the issues between the two Kingdoms is explained.

Brienna was given to Magnalia House as a young girl by her grandfather, her mother has died and she is not allowed to know who her father is. She just knows he is Maeven. She is curious and passionate. Just not about any of the passions, she is okay at Knowledge and so she decides to study that. I enjoyed her a lot because she does what she wants to do and gives it her all. She starts to have visions which push her into the middle of the Kingdom of Maevena.

Cartier is Brienna’s teacher and I thought he was much older than he actually was. Only later in the book, where they discuss his past, I started to understand he was much younger than I thought.

Jourdain becomes Brienna’s patron, he is mysterious and kind. He wants to be a father to her and does anything for his family. He has a son, Luc, and originally I thought Brienna would fall for him, but luckily Rebecca didn’t do that to us.

Overall I think The Queen’s Rising is such a great read, it kept me hooked from start to finish and I finished it in one day. The writing is very visual and every sentence is well crafted. I loved it.
