Book Review: Writing Magic by Gail Carson Levine

When I write, I make discoveries about my feelings

First I read Writer to Writer and only after that Writing Magic because I worried this book would be about magic systems and I am not into the difficult technics on writing a magic system. So it was a nice surprise that Writing Magic wasn’t about magic, but about great writing.

Synopsis

Gail Carson Levine shares her secrets of great writing. She shows how you, too, can get terrific ideas for stories, invent great beginnings and endings, write sparkling dialogue, develop memorable characters—and much, much more. She advises you about what to do when you feel stuck—and how to use helpful criticism. Best of all, she offers writing exercises that will set your imagination on fire.

With humor, honesty, and wisdom, Gail Carson Levine shows you that you, too, can make magic with your writing.

I give Writing Magic by Gail Carson Levine five out of five hearts because I think this novel is a great addition to any writer’s arsenal. It is very interesting and clearly written.

The book is an easy read and the writing exercises are easily done in half an hour. I enjoyed doing them and helped me discover my own writing voice. Sometimes I thought the exercises were a little to restricting, I rather do very generic ones, but it worked none the less.

Gail Carson Levine knows a lot about writing and gives her own works and other peoples works as well done examples, which is great. It gives you something to check out on the subject that she just discussed to see it with your own eyes.

I wish Gail had some more books on writing because I like her writing style and the exercises. Unfortunately I have read both and there are none anymore. I will have to look for a new good author of writing books.
