Book Review: The One by Kiera Cass

The best people all have some kind of scar

I have a love/hate relationship with this series. I do not like the romance, but I keep being intrigued by it.

Synopsis

The time has come for one winner to be crowned.

When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon’s heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she’ll have to fight for the future she wants.

I gave The One by Kiera Cass three stars out of five, because I do not think the book is badly written. It is just not my kind of story, romance and such. The book feels like a reality series on tv and it is well written. I just am not one for romantically focused books.

America has grown a lot since the beginning of the series. I do not think she grows much over the course of this book, but that is okay.

The intriguing part of the series, I think, lies for me with the rebels attacking the castle because they do not like the monarchy/castes. I liked thinking about why they would attack the castle, even though they did not get much out of it, maybe only killing people or losing lives on their own side.

During the first half of the series you get to know the underlying reason for why the Northern rebels attack and it would be resolved if America and Maxon would just be honest to each other. But Mer wants to wait for Maxon to figure out he wants her completely.

And to make it even more confusing when Maxon finally chooses who he wants to marry, he changes his mind twice within the course of 24 hours or so! So annoying!

The last few chapters were great, there it finally is, the wedding and also some more intense moments. Which I really liked.

Because I did like the end of this book, I decided to read the rest of the series too.
