Book Review: The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Isn’t that what stories do, make real things fake, and fake things real?

At first I did not know what to think of The Winner’s Curse by Marie Lu. The first half is a bit slow and throughout the novel it is very chaotic. One twist after another, which ended up making the book a bit chaotic.

Synopsis

Winning what you want may cost you everything you love…

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

I gave The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski three out of five hearts. It wasn’t a bad story, but it just did not resonate with me.

Kestrel is a girl that is torn between what her father wants and what she wants. She feels trapped, I think, because she knows she will never fully have what she wants, but she also can’t give her dad reign over her live. That’s why her choice at the end of the novel came to me as a surprise.

I found the actions of Arin confusing and hope he would make up his mind. But he did not really. I have no idea what Marie thought with this character. He was not anything I would have liked to read about. I much rather see Ronan more in these novels.

The universe is pretty interesting to explore. I would love to read something that happened during that war that flipped the world downside up before the novel. But I also think the relationship between the Herrani and the Valorians.

Overall with such an amazing universe and a great lead I think The Winner’s Curse could deserve more than 3 stars, but I just have read books that were better than this.
