Are you a Prime?
First of, I gave Sixth Prime by Dan O’Brien 4 out of 5 stars because I thought it was a great novel. The only reason I did not gave it it another star was the fact I did not like the end of the novel. To me multiple of the story-lines in the book did not have proper endings and it made me very sad.
The multiple story-lines make you guess at how they are connected. It liked that a lot. I enjoyed the story-line of Inmate 41E57-A the most. He is optimistic even though he does not remember who he used to be before going to prison. He gets a quest from an unknown man, which would allow him to take revenge. I am very curious how this story will play out.
The story-line I enjoyed the least was the one with Leda & Lorelei. There were a bit too many characters for it to all make sense. It made it hard to care about them.
The story is very well written. There was never a dull moment and sometimes even a lot of things going on. Pieces that I felt like: “OMG, what is going on?” and had to reread a paragraph to completely understand it. The story drew me in completely and I had a hard time putting it down. Now that I am done with it I would like to move on with the next book in the series.
The Interview
Can you tell me a bit about yourself? And something about the book? I’ve been writing for almost two decades now and managed to publish around 50 stories and novels during that time. I can’t imagine being anything other than an author; it is the perfect outlet for how I think, how I see the world. Sixth Prime is the first book in a series that I am really excited about. My hope is that readers will enjoy the book (and subsequent books) as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I just loved Sixth Prime, it has been a while since I read through a book in just a few hours. I think the world of Sixth Prime is very interesting.
How did you get to the world of the Prime Saga? It all started with psychology. I studied psychological science in graduate school, so I have an interest in the humn condition, in how people think. Also, I love math and the cosmos, so it all came together in this very interesting attempt to combine my love of space, math, and psychology. I can’t say much more without giving away where the series is going to go, but needless to say, it is very character-driven.
Did you have a hard time, figuring out how to make all of the story-lines work together? Not at all. I do a lot of outlining prior to writing; and for Sixth Prime, I made it a point to map out all six books and where the characters were going eventually. This way, I can let the characters grow organically as I write them without have to sacrifice narrative continuity.
Because it seems so real. If space travel was a real thing, at least. I would compare it to things like Star Wars, it feels very natural in the way the characters just travel between planets.
I liked most of the characters, they felt very rounded and balanced. I did not have any problems with any of the characters, I just felt the characters with Leda and Lorelei, where a bit less detailed, because they had so little to do.
Who is your favorite character to write about? I really enjoyed writing Cel Whitesun and Gloom, as they represented two very different types of characters. A lot of readers (so far) felt very strongly about Ale Euclid. Admittedly, he was also an interesting character study.
I had some problems with the ending of the book, a lot of the story-lines did not feel finished.
Are you planning to resolving all the question a reader might have after reading this book? Absolutely. The major question in Sixth Prime, the one starts out the book, is resolved; but all of the minor story-lines are building toward something much more. Spoiler alert: the remaining Primes get powers 😉
This may feel like an odd question, but
Would you buy a single trip to Mars (a non-return trip)? I would indeed if I could bring my wife and my puppy.
