Synopsis

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

It took me some time to get to reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik and I loved it! That is the reason why I gave it five out of five stars.

Naomi Novik writes with such great descriptiveness and came up with this great story. I have not read anything written by her. But I really liked the way she wrote Uprooted.

Agnieszka is a great character. She is so completely rough and incompetent and feels completely real. She is pretty flawed and that is what I like about her. She grows into her own and she is great and protective.

When I started reading the book, I did not think we would hear a lot about Kasia after Agnieszka leaves the village. But I was very glad when she started to play a bigger role in it and I started to love her too.

The Dragon is an interesting character, but he does not seem as developed as the others. But he is like-able and everything he does has been thought through. I like the way he has been written.

I would advice every one to read Uprooted, because it just such a great read. I might consider reading Naomi’s other book. I like her writing-style, but I read a lot and so might not have any time for them.
