The beautiful thing about books was that anyone could open them
Wanting to get to reading A Conjuring of Light by Victoria Schwab, I thought it would be a good idea to get used to reading Victoria’s writing style by reading This Savage Song. I did not like the story all that much.

Synopsis
There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.
Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.
I give This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab three out of five hearts because I did not enjoy it a lot. It felt very predictable and Kate rubbed me the wrong way. I have no idea why. But the overall story was very slow too.
Kate is one of those very characters that just get what they want. But just not from the person she wants it from, her father. I hated her easy attitude for this serious world.
August is a “monster” wanting to be a regular human. I found him interesting, but in the mean time completely alienated me because it is most of the novel not even clear his is not a real human. I was very sad you see this want coming from him, but it is never really clear until the end why he wants this.
The story overall is also not very good. It is slow and just takes forever to get anywhere. You see Kate becoming suspicious of her fathers butler, but I saw immediately that her father was behind it too, but she didn’t. How could she not see it? It is okay tht August does not see it, because his brother is not that close to him and I did not even see his brother’s betrayal coming.
Mostly this book was one big disappointment and I have no idea if I am going to read Our Dark Duet, but probably eventually when I need something easy to read.

Oh my gosh, that is too bad! The premise sounds soooooo good. It’s unfortunate when the execution does not entirely meet the same “awesomeness-level”.
I wonder if it is one of those series that gets better as it moves along, though.
My fingers are crossed, because the idea is amazing.
