Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real
I wanted something different to read, so I used [What Should I Read Next.com(http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/) to see what else I could read. The first two novels on the list were 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days. I think they were okay, but I did not like the writing style.
Book Review: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea & Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne
Rating:
Title & Author: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea & Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne
Genre: Science-Fiction, Adventure
Release Date: 1870 & 1872
Series: Standalone
Overall I give both 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne three out of five hearts. The stories were well written, but just not in a style I like.
Around the World of 80 Days felt like a trip that is done out of the blue without any prep, which I do not believe would be possible in the time it is set. Because the pieces of the trip each take a while the routes are not extremely much traveled and so they would not go at just any point in time. It feels very much like the start of each leg of the trip is picked exactly so by Jules Verne so it would line up and it would be fine. It takes away from the reality of the story.
I had less problems with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But I did not like the way it was written. It felt very much like someone reciting the events after they happened instead of the reader being on board of the submarine.
This also bothered me a bit about Around the World, but there it felt like someone was telling the reader at the end of the day, which would mean the reader was onboard with the characters and read a bit nicer. But overall I do not like things being recited to me as a way of writing a novel.
The stories themselves were fine, but like I said it is not a writing style I like.
