Book Review: Matched by Ally Condie

Do not go gentle.

Do not go gentle, and I will not. I did not like Matched by Ally Condie, to me it felt like just another love story – which I do not think are good ways of storytelling. But the story did not have big plot holes and the characters are fine. It is just that I don’t like love stories, so nothing against the book!

Synopsis
In the Society, officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.

Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s hardly any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one…until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.

Okay, here I have a dilemma, I like dystopian novels. I really like dystopias! But reading the synopsis of Matched already made me hesitate. It is mostly a love story and I really don’t like those. But I started on this book a few days ago and really did not like it. I don’t care for people who are only driven by love, I feel it is shallow.

It is not because Ally Condie wrote the story wrong or because the characters are not interesting. But I just really hate love stories! The story is well told, in no way it is not clear what happens and the twist at the end is great. The characters are great too.

Cassia is well done, she feels like a real girl, she believes in the system, but then things happen and her view starts to change. That is clear. She sometimes seems a bit shallow because of her focus to see Ky or to find Ky (by the end of the book), but she mainly is not.

Ky is also an interesting character, he is from the Outer Provences and you get to see a bit about his background story. I do feel the story would have benefited from Ky’s side of the story and I am glad Allie changed that in the second book.

The third main character is Xander, he seemed nice and understanding, even when it meant he would not get his match. But I also felt like he did not care as much about Cassia as she did for him just after their match. I did not like his personality. He rubbed me the wrong way.
