Book Review: The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1-6 by Kieron Gillen

I’d appreciate it if you could at least be creepy in a way I could understand

I only found The Wicked + The Divine last year (or already two years ago) and from the first volume on I loved it and needed more of it in my life. By now the series consists of 6 volumes and I hope there will be another release this year.

Synopsis

Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead.

Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever.

I give The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1-6 by Kieron Gillen five out of five hearts because I love it but the last two issues I wasn’t a big fan of.

The comic has several main characters, not only the various gods. But also young Laura and the elderly Ananke. They are a very diverse group of characters and in (almost) every age group.

Laura basically narrates the series, but sometimes you see things where she wasn’t present. She knows what she wishes and what she doesn’t have. In the beginning I sort of feel sad for her, she is such a groupie until she befriends Lucifer. Lucifer brings her into the Pantheon, but also (in my eyes) makes her interest in the gods disappear.

Ananke is a mysterious woman, she guides the gods. She rubbed me the wrong way, every time she was in a scene. She acts all friendly and then betrays people right where they stand.

Lucifer disappears early on in the series, which I found sad because I thought she was interesting and would want to know more about her. The same goes for her human life before the Pantheon.

Minerva sounds like a great character, but barely does anything. At first I couldn’t figure out what the gender of this character was because she looked like a boy most of the time. But only by volume 6 I was sure she was a girl because she finally started to grow out her hair.

Overall I think the story is great, the world is great even. I just didn’t like the story of the last two volumes and I am hoping now that that part is over it will get better again. I just felt the story didn’t work that well for the series.
