Book Review: Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe

Thing Explainer book-cover

The Ten Hundred Most Used English Words

Okay so technically this is not a novel. But I loved the premise of it, things explained with the 1000 most used words. I have not been a frequent reader of XKCD, but I knew of the existence of it.

Synopsis

In Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words, things are explained in the style of Up Goer Five, using only drawings and a vocabulary of the 1,000 (or “ten hundred”) most common words. Explore computer buildings (datacenters), the flat rocks we live on (tectonic plates), the things you use to steer a plane (airliner cockpit controls), and the little bags of water you’re made of (cells).

The objects talked about in the Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe are very interesting, they are objects one would not stand still over how they work and are. But it does not mean that they don’t have an interesting mechanic! I love the simple way it is written, anyone will get it and I am certainly going to keep this book around for when I have children.

I had some troubles getting through the book because the words used are so simple, it took me more effort to understand what was going on. It did not kill the fun of it, but it did take me a pretty long time to get through every page because of it.

Overall a very nice book to learn from or just to enhance your knowledge.
