True love is usually the most inconvenient kind
Romance novels are the worst to me, usually. And having a love-triangle in a book turns me off like crazy. But I have love/hate relationship with this book. I hate it for all that it stands for and that people like this shit. But it also reads real easily and is most of the times fun.

Synopsis
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
I give The Selection by Kiera Cass three out of five hearts. Due to my love/hate relationship with this book/series. I do not like romance novels, which this is and the love triangle turns me off even more. I wish America would make up her mind about every couple of seconds during the reading of this novel.
Most of this novel consists of America getting to know Mason and what The Selection entails for her, as someone who does not really want to be there and who does it only so her family is fed at the end of the day.
During most of the novel I felt like I was reading an extreme explanation of a reality show, which I hate btw! I do not watch tv, because the world seems obsessed with those lately. Anyway! But it also kept me reading, because all the stupid mistakes America makes are so funny and there are not too many of those, just enough to keep people laughing.
You do not get to see much of Mason, though I do think it is an interesting character. In some things he agrees with America, that the country has to be changed and in others he is completely clueless. You do not get to see who far he is in his training to become the new King, but for someone who is going to rule the country one day, he knows sometimes very little about it. Like how people in his country are starving and he does not even know it! After he learns about it, he immediately takes measures to make things better, that is good. I just feel he should have know, though.
Because it kept me reading I gave it three hearts, even though without it I would have given it probably more something like one and a half or two hearts. I am not saying the book is badly written, but this novel has all the tropes that I hate in literature. It kept me distracted from those things though and that’s why I give it three hearts.
