Book Review: Four Children’s Books

That night he had a stomach ache

Since I have had my little girl I have been reading several children’s books over and over again. I will not talk about the ones I have read the most because they are all exactly the same (‘This Is Not My …’). But I will talk about Fox in Socks, The Very Hungry Catapillar, Where’s Spot? and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy.

I have never read Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd when I was younger, but I know I loved The Very Hungry Catapillar by Eric Carle and have read Wher’s Spot? by Eric Hill. I have to say that for what they are (early children’s books), they are funny and very nice to (re)read.

I love reading Fox in Socks and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy to my little one because they are so repetitive and she likes hearing them. I try to read them every week to her to help her learn words, she won’t learn to read with them just yet because she doesn’t care for sitting with me to look at the words just yet.

Where’s Spot? is one of those books where I fear for it, because my daughter’s little hands love pulling on things and so the flaps get a lot of tugging and abuse. I tend to not read it as much, but it’s a fun little story and will make an older kid interact with the book.

The Very Hungry Catapillar is probably the most well known book in this list. Even my GP’s office has stickers from Eric Carle’s universe. The drawings are cute and beautiful. The story is funny and actually tells something to your child about nature and is not just made up, which is probably the appeal of this book.

I love reading children’s books right now, I am even rereading some of my own childhood favourites, so maybe there will be more reviews for them coming soon.
