Synopsis

When Sybella arrived at the doorstep of St Mortain half mad with grief and despair the convent were only too happy to offer her refuge – but at a price. The sisters of this convent serve Death, and with Sybella naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, she could become one of their most dangerous weapons.

But her assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to the life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. But when Sybella discovers an unexpected ally she discovers that a daughter of Death may find something other than vengeance to live for…

Again a great historical novel by Robin LaFevers, Dark Truimph. The facts are straight and the story has again great characters.

Though it got me confused in the beginning, because I started reading this one before reading the back or knowing anything about this one. Because it seemed to start somewhere in the last 3rd of Grave Mercy, but we already knew what happened after the battle. But when I read how Sybella signals Ismea to save the Duchess, I instantly got that I was reading from Sybella’s POV.

Knowing how Sybella was when she first came to the convent, it makes me really interested in that part of the story. Like why she would rather die then stay in the convent. And I was a bit sad it was not there. But this story has so much happening that there might not have been a place to put that story in.

This also influences my feeling about why she sometimes acts weird. Some of my questions got answered but not all. I was shocked by some of the revelations in this book, so this is not a very light read.

Sometimes I wonder how someone can write things like this, being so great but also so cruel to ‘their darlings’. Nonetheless I love this series even after a second read and all the secrets have been spilled anyway.
