Book Review: The Test by Sylvain Neuvel

We will survive. All of us

I loved Sylvain Neuvel’s writing already, but The Test is a simple concept and brilliantly executed.

Synopsis

Britain, the not-too-distant future.
Idir is sitting the British Citizenship Test.
He wants his family to belong.
Twenty-five questions to determine their fate. Twenty-five chances to impress.
When the test takes an unexpected and tragic turn, Idir is handed the power of life and death.
How do you value a life when all you have is multiple choice?

I give The Test by Sylvain Neuvel five out of five hearts because it is brilliant. The writing is great and the story is moving. It is a very short novel, which made it an extremely easy read. And the characters were great too.

Idir knows he is sitting for the British Citizenship Test, all he has to do is answer twenty-five questions and he and his family will be allowed to stay in the country. But soon it takes a dramatic turn and this is where I thought the story really gave us a view into who Idir is. I loved him and his morals.

I don’t want to spoil the rest, so I am going to say that this novel has a great Black Mirror twist and I loved it.
