Book Review: Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas

She was a ghost. A wraith

I believe Catwoman is my worst-rated book in the DC Icons Series. It was a good read, but I just think it’s not up to Sarah J. Maas’ standard neither the DC Icons’ I have come to expect.

Synopsis

When the Bat’s away, the Cat will play. It’s time to see how many lives this cat really has. . . .

Two years after escaping Gotham City’s slums, Selina Kyle returns as the mysterious and wealthy Holly Vanderhees. She quickly discovers that with Batman off on a vital mission, Batwing is left to hold back the tide of notorious criminals. Gotham City is ripe for the taking.

Meanwhile, Luke Fox wants to prove he has what it takes to help people in his role as Batwing. He targets a new thief on the prowl who seems cleverer than most. She has teamed up with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, and together they are wreaking havoc. This Catwoman may be Batwing’s undoing.

I give Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas three out of five hearts because I thought it had a couple of flaws and I felt did not live up to Sarah’s and DC Icons’ standards.

Catwoman aka Selina Kyle is a young woman trying to keep herself and her little sister alive even though her sister has cystic fibrosis. It makes it reasonable why Selina does what she does and makes sure the reader cares about what happens to this anti-hero. But I think this is why I thought it wasn’t up to Sarah’s standards. It is very hard to make a reader care for someone who does bad things, beating up good people and stealing to name a couple of things. I had a hard time connecting with her whenever her sister wasn’t mentioned. Which was a lot.

Luke felt a bit like a random character, I have heard of Batwing, but never Luke Fox. Sarah also doesn’t develop him as well in the book as Selina, which makes me not care for him. The same goes for Poison Ivy and Harley.

But another bad thing about the story I found was that there wasn’t a lot of foreshadowing of what Selina was planning for the end even though she acts like she had when it is the grand finale. It made me feel sad. Also, I wonder why this book is called Catwoman: Soulstealer. For each of these DC Icons books, the second title had something to do with the story, but I wouldn’t know why Soulstealer, maybe it should be called Liarer, which seems more accurate.
