Synopsis

It’s the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom.

The accident season has been part of seventeen-year-old Cara’s life for as long as she can remember. Towards the end of October, foreshadowed by the deaths of many relatives before them, Cara’s family becomes inexplicably accident-prone. They banish knives to locked drawers, cover sharp table edges with padding, switch off electrical items – but injuries follow wherever they go, and the accident season becomes an ever-growing obsession and fear.

But why are they so cursed? And how can they break free?

I give The Accident Season by Moïra Fowley-Doyle four out of five hearts because I thought the story had a lot of potential. It fulfills most of it, I just had a couple of points where I was wondering whether I missed a couple of pointers.

Cara has grown up with the worry of the accident season in mind. She follows every rule her mother gives them to protect herself.

Elsie is a strange character. She is visible in a lot of pictures, to both Cara and her friend, Bea (or was it the sister Alice?), at the beginning of the book, also in the school. But because Cara is now focused on Elsie, she all of a sudden can’t find her. This sets up mystery. But if we have to believe that she is a combination of the real girl Elsie and their sister Elsie, she should still be in the school. The school girl Elsie, can’t disappear all of a sudden.

Now on the bad side. I was confused by the end whether or not the accident season is actually a thing. Whether or not is is caused by Elsie going away or just them messing up a month each year (since it doesn’t really stick to the 31 days of October). Also there weren’t a lot of clues to tell us whether it was the one answer or the other, which I think is a bit bothering.

Overall The Accident Season is an eerie and haunting story. It is well written and really interesting to read. Moïra has a great way of keeping the suspense going, but just missed out on lifting the veil of the eyes of the reader.
