Book Review: The Sleeper and The Spindle by Neil Gaiman

I like stories where women save themselves

I found a beautiful edition of The Sleeper and The Spindle and needed to have it. I think the story itself if okay, but could be better.

Synopsis

A thrillingly reimagined fairy tale from the truly magical combination of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell – weaving together a sort-of Snow White and an almost Sleeping Beauty with a thread of dark magic, which will hold readers spellbound from start to finish.

On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. She casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes her chain mail and her sword and follows her brave dwarf retainers into the tunnels under the mountain towards the sleeping kingdom. This queen will decide her own future – and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. Twisting together the familiar and the new, this perfectly delicious, captivating and darkly funny tale shows its creators at the peak of their talents.

I give The Sleeper and The Spindle by Neil Gaiman four out of five hearts. I think it is a great story and the book contains beautiful illustrations.

I hoped this book would be greater than it actually was. I loved Coraline and Stardust, but I did not love The Sleeper and The Spindle. It was good however and not bad however. I even think that in the future I will read this book again with my children. They can learn things from it, like every other fairy-tale. It is not too romantic and doesn’t make everything seem like this great world.

This book is really pretty and if you can get your hands on an edition, I would advise you to get one. Even if you are not much of a Gaiman or fairy-tale fan.
