Book Review: Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel

I may believe in God, but I’m at war with him

After finishing Sleeping Giants I wanted to read Waking Gods too, but this is where an issue came up. After the end of the novel, I need to read Only Human, the last part in this amazing trilogy. But it is not out yet! HELP.

Synopsis

As a child, Rose Franklin made an astonishing discovery: a giant metallic hand, buried deep within the earth. As an adult, she’s dedicated her brilliant scientific career to solving the mystery that began that fateful day: Why was a titanic robot of unknown origin buried in pieces around the world? Years of investigation have produced intriguing answers—and even more perplexing questions. But the truth is closer than ever before when a second robot, more massive than the first, materializes and lashes out with deadly force.

Now humankind faces a nightmare invasion scenario made real, as more colossal machines touch down across the globe. But Rose and her team at the Earth Defense Corps refuse to surrender. They can turn the tide if they can unlock the last secrets of an advanced alien technology. The greatest weapon humanity wields is knowledge in a do-or-die battle to inherit the Earth . . . and maybe even the stars.

I give Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel four out of five hearts beause it is a great novel. It is not extremely fast past, but pit picks up after awhile.

Sylvain works very well with his characters, the interviewer, Rose, Kara, Vincent and Ryan. Ryan has less of a role after the events halfway through Sleeping Giants, but he came back and this made happy. He got redemption for his acts, which made me really happy. Kara and Vincent finally do something more with their romance and when they find out the doctor, that did tests on them in Sleeping Giants, actually used their dna to get other women impregnated. They go and get the child, to safe them from people who want to use it for other purposes.

Kara is very confused for most of this novel. She dies in the previous novel and then is reconstructed to reappear a year after her death, but for her four years after the moment she remembers last. It is very interesting how she deals with this news, very well written by Sylvain.

A giant from space invades England and Kara and Vincent semi-win a fight with it after getting half of London removed from the planet. The scientists need to deal with the devastating consequences. I thought this was very well done and loved reading it.

Later even more giants come and start killing humanity. Is great to see which humans actually survive. I loved the way earth deals with it and the struggle to find out what the giants plan is.

The end of the novel is such a great cliffhanger. I feel like I really need to read Only Human now because I want to know what happens. I hope I can get my hands on it tomorrow. I would advice everyone to read these novels, they are really great.
