Book Review: The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Leap, and the net will appear

To get better at finishing my projects I did 12 week project The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I found the use of God and other spiritual notations a bit too much, but it was okay. It also didn’t make any change in my life.

Synopsis

The Artist’s Way is the seminal book on the subject of creativity. An international bestseller, millions of readers have found it to be an invaluable guide to living the artist’s life. Still as vital today—or perhaps even more so—than it was when it was first published one decade ago, it is a powerfully provocative and inspiring work. In a new introduction to the book, Julia Cameron reflects upon the impact of The Artist’s Way and describes the work she has done during the last decade and the new insights into the creative process that she has gained. Updated and expanded, this anniversary edition reframes The Artist’s Way for a new century.

I give The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron three out of five hearts because I found it very spiritual and it didn’t need to be. I also had a lot of the knowledge that is contained within this book already, so I didn’t learn much from it. So it didn’t give me much.

The writing was okay, but very preachy, in my eyes, about God being the reason one is creative. Which is sad to me. It does say you don’t have to call it God or something else, but Julia Cameron describes everything as if there is a force behind our creativity even though I feel it did not help me get more creative in anyway. I did get from this book that if you just do things, to not be scared of others and yourself, you could do anything. Which is true, but I already knew.

The whole course is meant to give you confidence again and to get you to do something creative daily. Which is something I would advice to anyone, whatever their goal is. If you do something everyday a little you will get to your goal eventually and it will not cost you all that much energy. Also if you do something everyday it will get into your habit and you will miss it if you don’t do it and you will do it anyway.

Maybe if I didn’t have so much knowledge already and actually did the morningpages every day I would have gotten somewhere with this course. I didn’t have time to spend my mornings writing 3 entire pages every morning, I did it for two and a half weeks, but when I have to start work at 6 a.m., I have to be up and going by 5.30 a.m. I want my sleep too, so I got into this habit of being very tired in only 3 days, where I still needed my energy for another 2 days of work I decided that the morning pages weren’t something for me in this point in my life.

I have made the agreement with myself that in 2018 after my move, I will try it again. Write 3 pages every morning to get into the habit of writing everyday and then spend my time writing 5,000 words a week, or maybe just an hour a day. But at least some writing habit.

Who knows where I will get with this and I will keep you up to date.
